A little late, bit here is my little report from this summer’s trip:
For various reasons there wasn’t time for a real mountain hike this time, bit nevertheless I managed to go for a trip to the mountain Hirisjøhøgda on my way to family and friends. Much of early summer I spent waiting for the delivery of my new car. Waiting time almost nine months. In addition I was concerned about my health. It is possible that I demand too much for an eighty-year old man.
The trip went to the lake Aurevann, only an hour walk from the parking lot 800 meters from my home. Last year I stayed on a little peninsula, but this time I decided on a little island in 02.09.2021he middle of the lake. It is so nice that i named it Paradise Island. Because it is so close, I could make several trips for food and equipment. Also, I was helped by my friend Arne to carry parts of my canoe for assembly. This was the 1st of June and I stayed until 11. July, only interrupted by trips for more food and the funeral of my good neighbor Britt Hanne Hansen.
The camp site was great and next to some old ruins that I don’t know the origin of. The site was well sheltered from the north wind. But there was a lot of cold wind form the south and south east, which I protected myself against with by the use of a lean-to south of my tent. This also made cooking easier and more comfortable.
The fact that we were on an island enabled Chomsky to run free. He was a pleasure to deal with. Carried a backpack of more than 20 kgs, jumped willingly into the canoe when we started and out again when we arrived. He fetched sticks out of the water and thus swam a lot.
Fishing was miserable. The biggest trout was 0.3 kgs. I also caught a lot of small perch, which is tasty, but you spend a lot of time removing bones. The wind was often so strong that it was difficult to fish from the canoe.
My advanced age makes me tire more quickly, so I rested a lot. Just to stand up from a lying position was a chore.
One sad fact is that people who had camped here earlier had not been very friendly to the environment. They had stripped the silver birch trees so that several had died. Also, they had thrown glass and metal on the fireplace. Seems as if the think that it thus will disappear. But I allow myself a polite question: What makes these jerks behave as they do?
On the whole the weather was cool. The warm weather came later in the summer.
I drove to Friisvegen on 10. August. The nest day we started on a hike to Hirisjøhøda not far from the place I used to camp in the winter. The weather was fair, but when we stopped at the top, it changed. I had just started pouring tea into my cup when a rough hailstorm started. It lasted for half an hour and was so intense that it was impossible to change into warm clothes. On our way down I decided not to change clothes as I expected I would dry up during the walk. Which happened. When we started on the way up we met a woman and her German shepherd. The dogs got along famously. When we came back she told us that she had worried about us and waited because of the weather and that she thought we were late. She had even phoned the police. When she could tell the policeman we were OK, he had said that he hoped they would be in the same shape when they reached 80.
